Sometimes it is possible to make your home a more comfortable temperature by fitting newer controls to the central heating system. Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) control the temperature in each room much better and together with more modern programmers they can save energy even on older systems, without neccesarily changing the boiler. So this can be considerably cheaper. (However it must be said that new boilers are much more economical to run).

Unlike many engineers when servicing central heating boilers I also check the rest of the central heating system and add corrosion inhibitor if it is required. Lack of corrosion inhibitor in a central heating system is likely to cost more than repairing the actual boiler.
